sixteen bit

sixteen bit

Sixteen bit is an exploration into alternate forms of digital-to-analog conversion, and its use in artistic contexts. Each of the 16 speakers in sixteen bit is controlled digitally, having one of three states: Out, In, or Off. This encoding allows for 33 discrete values of sound pressure to be generated, giving approximately 5 bits of DAC resolution. In addition to this, the voltage applied to the speakers can be modulated as well, maximizing the dynamic range across the 5 bits.

While the advent of digital music electronics has brought numerous advances to sound production, the all-analog signal chain is still held in high regard by many musicians. Many guitar players prefer the sound of tube amps, and manufacturers have responded by making their transistor amps sound like tubes. This project takes a different path, providing a completely digital signal chain, from input to output.
